Velodyne Acoustics VI-Q Series – For expressive and precise low frequency sound
With the new Velodyne Acoustics VI-Q Series, the developers of Velodyne Acoustics want to address a particularly wide range of customers; the aim is to make hi-fi and home cinema equally possible with these solutions.
During development, special attention was paid to creating solutions with a very precise, deep reproduction of the lower frequency spectrum, whereby a closed construction was chosen.
The subwoofers are equipped with a particularly light, but at the same time immensely stiff membrane made of carbon fibre, as well as with a very powerful drive, which is supposed to show off an excellent impulse reproduction with very low distortion around a 3 inch voice coil.
The subwoofers are all equipped with particularly efficient Class D amplifier modules.
Three models – the right subwoofer for every application
As already described, the new Velodyne Acoustics VI-Q Series comprises three models and thus the solutions Velodyne Acoustics VI-Q 10, Velodyne Acoustics VI-Q 12 and Velodyne Acoustics VI-Q 15. This should ensure that a broad spectrum of applications is covered, be it the use in the living room for classic stereo, or in the designated home cinema.
As you might guess, the three models differ in the diameter of the woofers, i.e. 10 inch, 12 inch or 15 inch woofers are used.
The model with the 15-inch woofer is described by the manufacturer as a particularly powerful subwoofer, with an impressive 650 watts RMS or 1,200 watts maximum output.
Despite the Class D design, a solid power supply is of course indispensable, and the manufacturer relies on a highly efficient switched-mode power supply with two 25 A 650 V MOSFETs to ensure consistently high performance for any blockbuster in the home cinema.
It is interesting that the two smaller models of the product line are not stingy with power either, after all, the Velodyne VI-Q 10 delivers 450 watts RMS and 850 watts peak and the Velodyne VI-Q 12 can boast 500 watts RMS and 900 watts peak.
By the way, all three models are designed in such a way that they can be seamlessly integrated into any living environment, because they rely on a timelessly elegant industrial design.
According to Velodyne Acoustics GmbH, to ensure that the power is converted into low frequencies with the usual precision, the cabinets must also be precisely matched. For this reason, the solid front is made of a 21-layer multiplex board with a material thickness of 50 millimetres in order to achieve particularly low distortion values. In addition, the shapely driver cover sits firmly and without a magnetic holder, so that the removable part stays in place even at high levels.
All the connections you need
The models of the new Velodyne Acoustics VI-Q Series naturally have all the connections that ensure flexible use. These include not only RCA but also XLR input sockets, solidly designed speaker terminals, trigger connections as well as a 5V USB port that serves as power supply for the upcoming Velodyne V-Connect system for wireless control.
Velodyne iWoofer App for full control
Subwoofers from Velodyne Acoustics GmbH are supposed to be easy to use, and this also applies to the models of the new Velodyne Acoustics VI-Q Series, where a DSP-based signal processing for room adaptation including a 25-band parametric equalizer is available via the Velodyne iWoofer App. Of course, all other relevant settings such as crossover frequency, phase and level can be adjusted and presets can be saved. Users who register their product with the manufacturer after purchase receive a voucher for the Pro version of the Velodyne iWoofer App, whose range of functions is extended and features a particularly precise, automatic room correction.
