Sony SA-RS5 Rear Speaker – Sony 360 Spatial Sound without cables

The new Sony SA-RS5 rear speakers are designed to enable surround sound around a soundbar in the living room without any cables at all, because they not only handle the actual signal transmission “wirelessly”, they also have an integrated rechargeable battery.

Sony SA-RS5 Rear Speaker, another solution from the Japanese consumer electronics company Sony Corporation, to enable surround sound in the living room using selected soundbar systems from the company. Sony Corporation even speaks of 360° spatial sound of its soundbar systems, which can be realised with the new Sony SA-RS5 Rear Speaker.

The special feature of the new Sony SA-RS5 Rear Speaker is that no cables are needed, because not only is the signal transmission “wireless”, an integrated rechargeable battery also means that a power cable can usually be dispensed with.

Optional Wireless Rear Speakers for Sony Soundbar System with Sony 360 Spatial Sound Mapping Technology Designed for the Sony HT-A7000 Soundbar

The new Sony SA-RS5 rear speakers are primarily designed for the Sony HT-A7000 soundbar, the solution that Sony Corporation announced in September 2021 as a 7.1.2-channel solution. For this soundbar, a firmware update is to be available in spring 2022 – as announced at CES 2022 in Las Vegas – which will equip it for Sony 360 Spatial Sound Mapping Technology.

This in turn requires surround speakers, such as the already available Sony SA-RS3S surround speakers, or the new Sony SA-RS5 rear speakers, which were also announced for the first time at CES 2022.

Sony SA-RS5 Rear Speaker for immersive surround sound

From summer 2022, users will be able to pair the Sony HT-A7000 with the optional SA-RS5 wireless rear speakers to enjoy an even more detailed and immersive 360 Spatial Sound experience, the Japanese company promises.

Sony’s new SA-RS53 wireless rear speakers, when paired with a compatible soundbar, offer optimal sound quality and wide directivity for 360 Spatial Sound.

Thanks to state-of-the-art technologies, these speakers are said to deliver nothing less than superior sound quality and wide directivity for 360 Spatial Sound Mapping, says Sony Corporation.

The new Sony SA-RS5 rear speakers are equipped with a woofer in combination with a dome tweeter and two passive radiators, which are supposed to ensure a rich performance in comparatively compact dimensions.

Upward-facing speakers serve to reflect the sound from the ceiling and thus guarantee the promised immersive sound experience.

The active speaker systems are driven by Sony S-Master amplifier modules with a power of 90 watts per channel, whereby each speaker has three amplifier channels for separate control of the aforementioned drivers.

Wireless connection, no power cable required

As mentioned earlier, signal transmission from the soundbar to the new Sony SA-RS5 rear speakers is wireless, and there’s no need to rely on a cable for power. The new Sony SA-RS5 Rear Speakers are equipped with an integrated rechargeable battery, which is supposed to offer a playing time of up to ten hours. After just ten minutes, a quick-charge function is supposed to provide a playing time of up to 90 minutes.

However, it should also be mentioned that the Sony SA-RS5 Rear Speaker can of course also be operated directly from the mains, as long as there is a socket in the immediate vicinity.

Automatic optimisation at the touch of a button

Sony Corporation states that the application is designed to be absolutely simple. For example, the wireless connection to the soundbar is established automatically and the sound field can be optimised at the touch of a button, whereby no separate microphone is required for the calibration based on the individual conditions in the room, but rather this is integrated directly into the Sony HT-A7000 soundbar.

Free-standing or wall-mounted

The new Sony SA-RS5 rear speakers, with dimensions of just 145 x 250 x 134 mm and a weight of 2.4 kg, can in the simplest case be placed directly behind the listener, for example on a piece of furniture. However, the speakers also allow wall mounting, for which no separate accessories are needed, as the rear panel is flat and has the appropriate holes.

Prices and availability

The new Sony SA-RS5 rear speakers are expected to be available from summer 2022, with a recommended retail price of €799. The Sony HT-A7000 soundbar, which is required as a basis, is already available from specialist dealers at a price of €1,299. Sony Corporation has announced that the firmware update for Sony 360 Spatial Sound Mapping Technology on the Sony HT-A7000 will be available in spring 2022.

Getting to the point

Even though Sony Corporation is already talking about an impressive surround experience with the Sony HT-A7000 7.1.2-channel soundbar, experience has shown that things only really get “round” with real surround speakers, and the Japanese company is now expanding its range with the new Sony SA-RS5 rear speakers. Since these speakers do not require any cables at all, this could be interesting for many users, because there is no need to lay any cables for a cinema evening in the living room.
