Sony HT-S400 Soundbar – Satter Surround Sound und klare Dialoge

The latest solution from Sony Corporation is a classic combination of soundbar and wirelessly controlled subwoofer, which is now presented in the form of the new Sony HT-S400.

For the new Sony HT-S400 soundbar, Sony Corporation once again promises to offer a solution that provides appealing sound for television, and even more, it should enable rich surround sound and clear dialogue, according to the Japanese consumer electronics company.

This is achieved in a familiar way, because the new Sony HT-S400 is a solution that, in addition to a slim soundbar, comes with an additional wireless subwoofer, and is supposed to be particularly easy to integrate into any living environment.

Sony HT-S400 – 2.1-Channel Soundbar and Surround Sound Nevertheless

The new Sony HT-S400 is designed as a 2.1-channel solution, but the manufacturer still promises cinema-quality surround sound.

This is to be achieved by means of Sony S-Force PRO Front Surround, a particularly high-quality technology for the reproduction of virtual surround sound based on Dolby Digital content, according to the manufacturer.

The sound comes from all sides through the digital sound field processing technology, so that the user can immerse directly into the sound event, according to the promise of Sony Corporation about Sony S-Force PRO Front Surround Technology.

Sony X-Balanced Speaker Unit with Separated Notch Edge

With the new Sony HT-S400, the Japanese consumer electronics company relies on special speaker chassis, so-called Sony X-Balanced Speaker Units, which have a rectangular shape of the diaphragm. According to the manufacturer, this makes optimal use of the available volume, even in a compact soundbar, and also reduces the excursion of the drivers while maintaining the same sound pressure, so that a particularly exact reproduction free of distortion is guaranteed.

Another special feature of the drivers is the Separated Notch Edge of the Sony X-Balanced Speaker Unit, which improves vertical vibration symmetry through strategically placed notches at the edge of the diaphragm.

Rich bass through wireless subwoofer

The subwoofer that comes with the Sony HT-S400 uses a 160 mm woofer to deliver a particularly rich, full bass, according to the manufacturer. Of course, you don’t have to worry about cables because the subwoofer is controlled by radio. This means that the subwoofer can easily be placed anywhere in the room, only a power socket is required in the immediate vicinity.

Designed to work with Sony BRAVIA TVs

It will come as no surprise to anyone that Sony Corporation has also designed the new Sony HT-S400 so that it can be combined particularly easily with its own TV sets, i.e. the current models in the Sony BRAVIA series.

The manufacturer promises easy networking with Sony BRAVIA televisions. The Sony HT-S400, for example, can be connected quickly and effortlessly to a Sony BRAVIA TV. Thanks to an integrated user interface, the soundbar settings are automatically displayed in the quick settings menu of the Sony BRAVIA TV. This makes it easy to adjust the sound settings and volume using the Sony BRAVIA remote control.

In addition, it should be mentioned that the HT-S400 soundbar can receive audio signals wirelessly from a Sony BRAVIA TV, allowing for a very easy connection without any tangled cables, according to the manufacturer’s promise.

The integrated user interface can be used with the following models: Sony Z9K series, Sony A95K series, Sony A90K series, Sony A80K series, Sony X95K series, Sony X90K series, Sony X90S series, Sony X85K series and Sony X80K series.

The Sony Z9J Series, Sony A90J Series, Sony A80J Series, Sony X95J Series, Sony X90J Series, Sony X85J Series and Sony X80J Series are also said to be supported, but require a software update.

Wireless connection via Bluetooth requires a Sony BRAVIA TV that supports Bluetooth A2DP, which is the so-called Advanced Audio Distribution Profile.

Suitable remote control included

Although everything is designed to work seamlessly with a TV and its remote control, the new Sony HT-S400 comes with a separate remote control. For convenient control, there is also an OLED display on the soundbar that shows all relevant information in a clearly legible manner.

Prices and availability

According to Sony Corporation, the new Sony HT-S400 should be available in specialist shops in April 2022. For the time being, the manufacturer gives a recommended retail price of € 270 for this solution, but adds that this is a provisional figure.

Getting to the point

Although the new Sony HT-S400 is ultimately only a soundbar designed as a 2.1-channel system, it is still supposed to deliver surround sound for the living room. Sony Corporation relies on Sony S-Force PRO Front Surround for this. Experience shows, however, that such solutions, especially in the price range of the new Sony HT-S400, cannot meet the demand for room-filling sound, because it requires much more sophisticated solutions…
