Sonus Faber Lumina II and Sonus Faber Lumina V

When Sonus Faber S.p.a. presented the Sonus Faber Lumina Collection in September 2020, the nomenclature alone showed that there was still room for more models. Now, the entry-level line is indeed being expanded with the Sonus Faber Lumina II and Sonus Faber Lumina V solutions.

It was in September last year that Sonus Faber S.p.a. presented the Sonus Faber Lumina Collection, a new entry-level line consisting of the Sonus Faber Lumina I, Sonus Faber Lumina III and Sonus Faber Lumina CI models.

It was clear from the very beginning that there was plenty of scope for further speaker systems, so it’s no surprise that the Italian loudspeaker manufacturer is now following up with two models, the Sonus Faber Lumina II and Sonus Faber Lumina V.

Sonus Faber Lumina Collection – new addition to the family

Up to now, the Sonus Faber Lumina Collection has consisted of a shelf speaker system, the Sonus Faber Lumina I, the floorstanding speaker system Sonus Faber Lumina III, and the centre speaker Sonus Faber Lumina CI.

This meant that the product range was already well positioned at the start, as it could be used as a classic stereo loudspeaker system in both small and large formats, as well as a multi-channel system for home cinema.

But of course it is Sonus Faber S.p.a.’s intention to make the product range even broader, so that even more users can be addressed.

One bookshelf speaker system, one floorstanding speaker system

The new models have been designed to be a step above the existing models, and the new Sonus Faber Lumina II is another bookshelf speaker system. The new Sonus Faber Lumina II is another bookshelf speaker system, and the Sonus Faber Lumina V is another floorstanding speaker system.

Lumia – Brightening up everyday life with music

The developers’ intention was to brighten up everyday life with the finest music. The fact that in this case only a comparatively manageable budget is required is pleasing, after all, the new Sonus Faber Lumina Collection is described as a new entry-level line, in the development and production of which – according to Sonus Faber – one nevertheless feels completely committed to the long tradition in high-quality loudspeaker construction.

Of course, this also applies to the two new models, which offer just as many fine features as the previously available systems.

Impeccable drivers

The speaker systems of the new Sonus Faber Lumina Collection once again rely on so-called D.A.D Tweeter, which stands for Damped Apex Dome, and which are used in the same form in the Sonus Faber Sonnetto Collection. Equipped with a 29 mm Soft Silk Diaphragm with a diameter of 29 mm, a chrome ring adorns the tweeter.

In the midrange, the drivers are also from the Sonus Faber Sonnetto Collection and use a special fabric made of natural fibres.

The woofer drivers have been specially developed for the new Sonus Faber Lumina Collection, according to the Arcugnano-based company, from the ground up, using a coated paper cone.

With one exception, namely the new Sonus Faber Lumina V. The Sonus Faber Lumina V has two also brand new 6.5 inch woofers, whose membrane is based on the sandwich construction. Two outer layers of cellulose and other natural fibres are combined with an intermediate layer of high-tech synthetic foam, which, according to the Italians, ensures a particularly natural sound reproduction.

The crossovers used in the new Sonus Faber Lumina Collection have also been redesigned from the ground up to ensure optimal phase and amplitude response and thus perfect timing. It goes without saying that the finest components are used here, as well as in the connection terminal, which is designed in such a way that both bi-wiring and bi-amping are possible.

Totally Sonus Faber, but…

Compared to other systems, the design of the new Sonus Faber Lumina Collection follows the guiding principle “less is more”, according to the manufacturer, thus relying on a virtually minimalist, square design, which is intended to focus on the quality of the materials used.

Three finishes are available, firstly an elegant black piano lacquer finish, then the wenge and walnut versions, although in all three variants only the baffle, but not the actual chassis, is manufactured in the respective finish. The cabinet itself is always finished in black leather.

Like the three speakers available so far, the two new solutions, Sonus Faber Lumina II and Sonus Faber Lumina V, are perched on a base that is slightly offset inwards in the case of the shelf speaker and protrudes above the cabinet in the case of the floor-standing speaker system, in which case it naturally has height-adjustable spikes.

The reason for this is simple, because the said base is actually the bass reflex port, which is used in all models and is led out to the front.

Sonus Faber Lumina II

The new Sonus Faber Lumina II is, as already mentioned, the second bookshelf speaker system in the Sonus Faber Lumina Collection.

With dimensions of 304 x 180 x 263 mm, it is quite a bit larger than its little sister, the Sonus Faber Lumina I, which measures only 280 x 148 x 213 mm.

It is a two-way bass reflex system, combining a 29 mm tweeter with a 150 mm low-mid driver.

This allows for a frequency range between 55 Hz and 24 kHz, with the crossover starting at 1.8 kHz. With an impedance of 4 ohms and an efficiency of 86 dB, this speaker system is designed for amplifiers with an output of between 30 and 150 watts.

Sonus Faber Lumina V

This is now the new flagship of the Sonus Faber Lumina Collection. As a floorstanding speaker system with dimensions of 1,049 x 280 x 372.6 mm, its appearance alone puts it at the top. By the way, this system already weighs 22.5 kg…

Furthermore, this floorstanding speaker system is designed as a three-way bass reflex system, which, as already mentioned, features two 165 mm cone drivers with sandwich diaphragm structure in addition to the 29 mm tweeter, a 150 mm Mittenton driver.

The crossover is also based on a special solution, namely a Hybrid IFF Paracross Topology, which intervenes at 260 Hz and 2.6 kHz.

The frequency range covered by the new Sonus Faber Lumina V is 38 Hz to 24 kHz.

The impedance is 4 ohms, the efficiency is 89 dB in the data sheet, and the amplifier should have an output of between 50 and 300 watts.

Come and meet the family…

To give you a complete picture of the Sonus Faber Lumina Collection, let’s take a look at the entire range.

The Sonus Faber Lumina I starts with a recommended retail price of € 799 per pair, an extremely attractive offer. This also applies to the new Sonus Faber Lumina II, which now joins the range as a second bookshelf speaker system. For this one, you have to budget € 1,100 per pair.

For the Sonus Faber Lumina III, the price per pair is only € 1,999. Above this is the new Sonus Faber Lumina V, for which the manufacturer lists a pair price of € 2,600. Even for the centre speaker you don’t really have to dig deep into your pocket, because the Sonus Faber Lumina CI is offered at a recommended retail price of € 649.

Finally, it should be mentioned once again that Sonus Faber recommends the Sonus Faber Gravis I and Sonus Faber Gravis II solutions as subwoofers for the use of the Sonus Faber Lumina Collection in home cinema. This way, you can build up a perfect 5.1-channel surround system, and with the addition of the two new models, you can be even more flexible.

Getting to the point

Initially there were three, now the Sonus Faber Lumina Collection comprises five models. With the Sonus Faber Lumina II and Sonus Faber Lumina V systems, a bookshelf speaker system and a floorstanding speaker system have been added, both of which are positioned a tad above their siblings and are therefore designed for somewhat larger rooms. All in all, this product range now offers an even more flexible option for designing fine hi-fi or home cinema systems, with all the charm of the Italian loudspeaker manufacturer, and at pleasingly attractive prices.
