Sennheiser X3R transducer
The heart of the new Sennheiser IE 900 is its unique dynamic transducer, the so-called Sennheiser X3R transducer, a further development of the audiophile 7 mm extra-wideband transducer of previous models. Once again, the focus is on even tighter tolerances and expert tuning. In combination with a coupled acoustic rear volume, this driver is said to be superior even to conventional multi-driver concepts, Sennheiser electronic GmbH & Co. KG is convinced.
This driver is manufactured in a fully automated production line at the audio specialist’s headquarters in Germany, so that only minimal scattering occurs throughout the series and thus a consistently high quality is guaranteed.
According to the manufacturer, the extremely light broadband transducers prevent distortion, deliver a natural, balanced sound and ensure transparent reproduction regardless of the listening volume.
Incidentally, a newly developed membrane foil is used here. This ensures a high degree of internal damping and thus minimises natural resonance and distortion. The company gives a THD of 0.05 % at 94 dB and 1 kHz as a reference. Incidentally, with a frequency response of 5 Hz up to 48 kHz, the new in-ear headphones are of course ideally suited for content in hi-res audio and, Sennheiser electronic GmbH & Co.KG is convinced, will reveal even the finest details of the music.
Housing milled from a single block of aluminium
The housing of the new Sennheiser IE 900 is also to be produced according to these high manufacturing standards, namely from a single block of aluminium. In concrete terms, a high-performance aluminium alloy is used, so that a flawless appearance is guaranteed even over many years.
The unique three-chamber absorber system, which Sennheiser calls the T3CA, is milled from this with the highest precision. This system was originally developed for the Sennheiser IE 800 and is also used in the new model.

Three acoustic chambers and an acoustic vortex milled into the receiver output counteract the so-called masking effect. This acoustic phenomenon occurs because the human ear cannot perceive high-frequency sounds at low volume levels when louder sounds occur simultaneously in a lower frequency range. By removing the energy of these masking resonances, the absorber system prevents unwanted peaks and makes even the finest nuances of sound audible.
Precision cameras closely inspect the transducer components during production, and the finished transducers are tested before and after assembly. For optimal performance, the assembled left and right earphones are paired by hand.
Cable flexibility through MMCX
By using MMCX connectors, the Sennheiser IE 900 is designed to give music lovers the freedom of choice when it comes to cables. The deeper integration into the housing ensures better stability of the gold-plated plug. The earphones come with an unbalanced cable with a 3.5 mm mini-jack plug as well as balanced cables with 2.5 mm as well as 4.4 mm plugs.
Tested for robustness and durability, the improved cables with para-aramid reinforcement can withstand thousands of bending cycles, according to the manufacturer.
