Roon Labs LLC. fine-tunes Roon for Linux – Roon 1.8 Build 846 for Linux

With Roon Build 846 for Linux, an update is available that brings profound innovations. However, this update only affects systems that use Linux as their operating system, such as third-party music servers.

With Roon 1.8 Build 846 for Linux, an update from Roon Labs LLC. is now available, which brings profound innovations, but only affects a fraction of the users. And only those who use hardware with the open source operating system Linux, as is often the case with third-party music server solutions.

Users who rely on a music server based on Roon ROCK are explicitly not affected, and there are currently no new updates for the Roon Bridge or apps under Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS, Apple iOS and Google Android.

New with Microsoft .NET Runtime

The essential innovation that comes with Roon 1.8 Build 846 for Linux is that the Mono Runtime used up to now is replaced by the Microsoft .NET Runtime. This is a very far-reaching intervention, which, however, according to Roon Labs LLC. should result in a significant performance gain. Especially when users have a larger media library at their disposal.

Only for Linux Core Systems

As already mentioned, the present update only concerns solutions based on Linux, whereby Roon OS and thus solutions based on Roon ROCK are explicitly excluded.

Of course, Roon OS is also Linux, but Roon Labs LLC. already relied on Microsoft .NET Runtime in the conception of this adaptation, so that no changes are necessary here.

Users who have configured their own music server based on an Intel NUC and Roon ROCK, for example, but especially users of a Roon NUCLEUS and Roon NUCLEUS+, do not have to make any changes to their system.

However, those who use a music server based on a conventional Linux distribution are called upon to change to Roon 1.8 Build 846 for Linux.

This is especially true for those who use Roon on a NAS, such as those from Synology or QNAP, but also for various third-party music servers, so-called Roon Core Partner Systems. Such solutions can be found from Innuos, Exasound, Small Green Computer or Grimm Audio.

Not for inexperienced users

We would like to point out that this update is not for inexperienced users, as it requires some changes on the command line level. It is not an update that can be installed with a simple click of the mouse, as is usual with other updates.

We will therefore spare ourselves the corresponding instructions here and refer to the support section of the website of Roon Labs LLC.

We would also like to point out that the Roon Core Partner Systems in question should not be updated by the user himself, as individual adjustments may be necessary.

These should be carried out by the manufacturer of these solutions in the form of firmware updates, because in the worst case scenario, the entire system will no longer start after the update to Roon 1.8 Build 846 for Linux.

Roon Labs LLC. states that all partners were informed in time about the changes that have now been made and that corresponding adaptations of Roon Core Devices should already be available or will follow as soon as possible. In case of doubt, users should ask the manufacturer of their music server.

Getting to the point

With Roon 1.8 Build 846 for Linux, a profound update from Roon Labs LLC. is available, but only for a comparatively small target group. Namely, those who use a so-called Roon Core Device from a third-party supplier or a Linux-based, self-configured music server. Users who own a Roon NUCLEUS or Roon NUCLEUS+ or who have configured a music server based on Intel NUC and Roon ROCK are explicitly not affected by this update. The Roon OS used here already relies on the Microsoft .NET Runtime introduced with Roon 1.8 Build 846 for Linux.
