Canton Sound M Soundbar – Virtual 2.1-channel surround sound

Designed as a virtual 2.1-channel system, the new Canton Sound M soundbar is intended to deliver impressive movie sound in the living room. Equipped with Canton Smart Wireless technology, this solution can also be expanded with other products from the Canton Smart series.

Canton Elektronik GmbH & Co. KG describes the new Canton Sound M Soundbar as a so-called Single Room Soundbar, a solution that delivers appealing film sound in the living room in the simplest possible way, and which also offers the possibility of being expanded with further solutions from the Canton Smart series via Canton Smart-Wireless technology.

It is therefore the simplest possible design with simultaneous flexible application possibilities that should speak for this soundbar.

Canton Sound M Soundbar – Elegant, classy and versatile

One of the most important features of the new Canton Sound M Soundbar, according to the German manufacturer, is its compactness, which guarantees that it can be integrated seamlessly into any living environment and can therefore be used in a variety of ways.

The new Canton Sound M Soundbar measures no more than 72.5 cm in width, 6.5 cm in height and 10 cm in depth. Thus, the Soundbar weighs in at 4 kg.

The design is described as elegant and downright classy, with the basis for the cabinet being a construction made of HDF, which is high-gloss lacquered in black or white, and which has a cover made of polished glass on the top.

The front is covered with a textile fabric, behind which an LED display is concealed in the centre and shows the most important information in a clearly legible manner.

Connected to the TV set, the Canton Sound M Soundbar also provides an on-screen display for particularly easy configuration.

Simple installation

According to the manufacturer, the new Canton Sound M Soundbar has all relevant interfaces, first and foremost HDMI, of course, so that installation is simple.

The audio signal is transmitted from the TV to the Canton Sound M Soundbar via HDMI using ARC (Audio Return Channel), and HDMI CEC also ensures central control using only the TV’s remote control.

For source devices, there are three HDMI inputs available on the new Canton Sound M Soundbar, which are equipped for content in 4K.

Alternatively, the new Canton Sound M Soundbar also has an optical and coaxial S/PDIF interface, an analogue input in the form of a pair of RCA sockets, and an RCA connection for an additional subwoofer.

No WLAN, but Bluetooth

The company explicitly emphasises that the new Canton Sound M Soundbar does not have WiFi, so streaming is primarily limited to Bluetooth, whereby a Bluetooth 5.0 module is used and up to two source devices can be connected to the Canton Sound M Soundbar simultaneously. In addition to SBC and AAC, the Soundbar also supports aptX, so that a signal transmission in “CD quality” is offered.

2.1 Virtual Surround Sound System

The Canton Sound M Soundbar is designed as a 2.1 Virtual Surround Sound System, according to the manufacturer’s description. In addition to four 50 mm drivers with aluminium diaphragms as mid-range and bass drivers, two 19 mm fabric domes are used as tweeters. Two passive cones and a bass reflex system are supposed to provide more bass,

The drivers are driven by a Class D amplifier with a system output of 300 watts. The frequency response is listed in the data sheet as 41 Hz to 23 kHz.

The system is able to process Dolby Digital and DTS encoded content, according to the manufacturer’s promise.

The Canton Sound M Soundbar has an integrated equaliser with three presets for adapting to the installation location and a voice function for better speech intelligibility.

Flexibly expandable

The new Canton Sound M Soundbar can, of course, primarily be used completely independently and, as just described, represents a 2.1 Virtual Surround Sound System.

What is exciting, however, is that it can also be expanded to include solutions from the Canton Smart series. Thus, two Canton Smart speakers can be used as surround speakers, and it is also possible to integrate a Canton Smart Sub 8, for example, whereby in each case the signal transmission is “wireless” and thus without cables.

To emphasise this once again, up to three devices of the Canton Smart Series can be combined.

This also means that the new Canton Sound M Soundbar can be used as a pure centre speaker, for example in combination with a Canton Smart connect 5.1 Multiroom AV preamplifier or a Canton Smart Amp 5.1 Multiroom AV amplifier.

Prices and availability

The new Canton Sound M Soundbar is available immediately in high-gloss white and high-gloss black. The scope of delivery includes a power cable, an HDMI cable, an optical and coaxial digital cable, an analogue cable with RCA connections and a matching infrared remote control.

The recommended retail price is stated by the manufacturer as €579.

Getting to the point

The new Canton Sound M soundbar is designed to be a particularly simple soundbar on its own, with 2.1 Virtual Surround. Although it doesn’t have streaming functionality via WiFi, it does have Bluetooth and is equipped with numerous interfaces for various source devices. Excitingly, it can be combined with solutions from the Canton Smart Series, be it a subwoofer or true surround speakers. It can also be used as a pure centre speaker, so that the new soundbar from Canton Elektronik GmbH & Co. KG proves to be extremely versatile.
