Bowers & Wilkins Music App for Bowers & Wilkins Formation Series

Bowers & Wilkins Music App, the app used to control the Bowers & Wilkins Formation Series, is now to receive a significant update, as the company has now announced. The main focus is on personalised content.

Bowers & Wilkins offers a product family of streaming solutions with the so-called Bowers & Wilkins Formation Series. The manufacturer itself refers to this as the Bowers & Wilkins Formation Wireless Technology Platform, which comprises a variety of solutions. This may, no, one must rather describe it as a prime example of a lifestyle solution with high demands on sound, intuitive operation, as well as elegant design.

A very important aspect is the control via corresponding apps, whereby the Bowers & Wilkins Home App was the main focus. Now the Bowers & Wilkins Music App is to be added as a further option, which will subsequently take over all tasks relating to the control of the Bowers & Wilkins Formation Series.

The aim of the new Bowers & Wilkins Music App is to make music streaming even easier to use, with direct access to a wide range of music streaming services and personalisation of content based on the user’s preferences being among the key features.

The app is of course available for both Google Android and Apple iOS and initially offers support for Qobuz, TIDAL, TuneIn and SoundCloud, as well as Dash Radio and NTS Radio in some markets. The company also promises that more services and streaming platforms will be added in the coming months.

Bowers & Wilkins emphasises Qobuz in particular, because it also enables high-resolution playback with 24 bit and 96 kHz.

The Bowers & Wilkins Music App combines the content of all available music services in a clear and elegant interface, according to the manufacturer’s promise.

As described, personalised recommendations are the focus here and a selection of curated Bowers & Wilkins playlists are also intended to further enhance the user experience.

It is important to note that the new Bowers & Wilkins Music App will run alongside the existing Bowers & Wilkins Home App, which will continue to provide setup functionality for Formation-enabled products in the short term. Later this year, however, Bowers & Wilkins will consolidate all app functionality for Formation-enabled products into the new Bowers & Wilkins Music App to create a unified setup, control and streaming experience, the company promises. The existing Bowers & Wilkins Home app will then become obsolete.

Of course, the Bowers & Wilkins Formation Series will also have other features beyond the new app, such as Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify including Spotify Connect, and access via Roon from Roon Labs LLC. The solutions are also certified as Works with Alexa and mobile devices can source directly via Bluetooth including support for aptX HD.

“I am very pleased to announce this significant expansion of the scope and capabilities of our world-class Formation technology. The new Music App is a statement of our intent to evolve and enhance our Formation-enabled product portfolio, and I’m confident it will help us continue to set the gold standard for wireless speaker sound quality.”

Geoff Edwards, Brand President Bowers & Wilkins

He said the company has recently expanded its development resources and engineering team through extensive hiring to expand the software and feature set of the Formation Wireless Technology Platform. Bowers & Wilkins plans to continue to invest in expanding the Formation product portfolio in the future to further enhance the user experience and add new features, including support for popular custom control systems such as Control4.

Getting to the point

The aim of the new Bowers & Wilkins Music App is to make music streaming even easier to use, with direct access to a wide range of music streaming services and personalisation of content based on the user’s preferences being among the most prominent features.
