Pro-Ject WMI Rack 5/4 - The lightning rod for resonances

It is the classic Pro-Ject rack from the 1990s that is now returning in the form of the Pro-Ject WMI Rack 5/4, which Pro-Ject Audio Systems says is an ideal solution for those who want to mount their hi-fi components on the wall in a space-saving way.

Pro-Ject WMI Rack 5/4, the classic rack from Pro-Ject Audio Systems, which the company already offered as a particularly elegant solution in the 1990s, is once again available. It is designed in such a way that hi-fi components can be mounted on the wall in a particularly space-saving way, and the manufacturer is convinced that this is a technically perfect rack.

Pro-Ject Audio Systems even describes the Pro-Ject WMI Rack 5/4 as a lightning conductor for resonances and as a solution in which sound-damaging external influences such as impact sound have no effect whatsoever.

Pro-Ject 5 – Back to the roots

The company has produced many different rack systems over the years, even if they were not the focus of attention, but the latest generation of Pro-Ject WMI Rack 5/4 is something really exceptional.

The solution to which the current Pro-Ject WMI Rack 5/4 refers was launched in the 1990s as Pro-Ject 5, a name chosen because it was simply the fifth product from Pro-Ject Audio Systems.

The fact that the latest generation is called the Pro-Ject WMI Rack 5/4 is quickly explained, because the 4 in the name simply refers to the four levels that this hi-fi rack offers.

The lightning rod for resonances

Heinz Lichtenegger designed the rack in the early 1990s together with his friend Heinrich Prohaska, based on research at the Vienna University of Technology. The concept was to eliminate unwanted resonances of hi-fi components, especially record players, simply by using a very light rack with particularly stiff materials. In concrete terms, a steel frame is used here.

In addition, and this is probably an outstanding feature, wall mounting was used. By coupling it to a concrete or brick wall, undesirable influences such as impact sound or vibrations from woofers in the room are effectively prevented.

Each shelf of the Pro-Ject WMI Rack 5/4 is made of wood, whereby these are decoupled from the frame construction by means of height-adjustable spikes.

Technical key data

The rack measures 530 x 1000 x 406 mm and thus weighs 12.6 kg. The shelf area is 498 x 355 mm and the maximum height between the shelves is 167 mm. The space between the shelves and the wall is supposed to be 50 mm, so there is enough room to lay all the cables effortlessly.

The specification of the load-bearing capacity of up to 50 kg is to be understood with caution, because of course the actual load-bearing capacity in this case depends solely on the wall on which the shelf is mounted. In any case, only wall plugs and screws that are optimal for the wall condition should be used for the assembly.

Prices and availability

The new Pro-Ject WMI Rack 5/4 is available in black or white and can be found in specialist shops immediately. The recommended retail price is € 599,-.

Getting to the point

The Pro-Ject WMI Rack 5/4 is an elegant hi-fi rack from Pro-Ject Audio Systems that shines above all because of its slim shape and wall mounting. It is precisely this wall mounting that is supposed to make the Pro-Ject WMI Rack 5/4 particularly effective, as well as the light but stable steel frame and the four shelves that are decoupled by means of spikes.
