Unison Research Simply 845 - Rebirth of a Classic

Some people call it the rebirth of a legend when the Italian hi-fi manufacturer Unison Research announces that it will bring the latest version of the Unison Research Simply 845 onto the market. It will be presented for the first time at Axpona 2023 in the USA in mid-April 2023.

Story Highlights
  • With the Unsison Research Simply 845, a true classic from Italy is to be offered in the latest form and celebrate its world premiere in mid-April 2023.

One might think that the new Unison Research Simply 845 is nothing more than another stereo integrated amplifier based on tube technology from the Italian hi-fi manufacturer Unison Research, and yes, viewed soberly, it is exactly like that. However, one has to ignore the fact that this product designation refers to an amplifier that is virtually treated as a classic, some even speak of a legend, whereby ultimately everything revolves around the tubes used here, the triodes of the 845 type.

The new Unison Research Simply 845 thus presents itself as a new edition of a classic, whereby it is a single-ended, fully Class A stereo integrated amplifier, which, according to the Italians, will celebrate its world premiere in mid-April 2023 at Axpona 2023 in the USA.

Unison Research Simply 845 – Nearly at the Top

The new Unison Research Simply 845 is to be placed near the top of the Unison Research range of stereo integrated amplifiers with tube technology, according to the promise of the Italian high-end hi-fi manufacturer, directly below the flagship Unison Research Absolute 845 SE Integrated Dual Mono Valve Amplifier. From the designation, it is quickly clear that these two have one thing in common, and that is the tubes, which have already been praised as a special feature.

Like the Unison Research 845, the new Unison Research Simply 845 is said to use the famous directly heated 845 triodes. Tubes that are known for their remarkable durability and their extraordinary sound characteristics, according to the company from Italy.

By the way, it is remarkable that Unison Research explicitly points out that they consider the concept of a stereo integrated amplifier superior to that of a separate preamplifier and power amplifier combination, because this way expensive connecting cables can be dispensed with, which, moreover, would never be truly neutral for the sound reproduction, as the company literally states.

In pure Class A

As already briefly mentioned, the new Unison Research Simply 845 operates entirely in Class A, i.e. both the preamplifier and the power amplifier, whereby ultimately, around two 845-type tubes as well as two ECC82 and two 12AU7, up to 23 watts per channel should be available as speaker systems with an impedance of 6 ohms.

The preamplifier circuits are fed by stabilised, linear electronic power supplies that have been specially developed to minimise interference with mains noise.

In general, attention has been paid to all details in order to achieve nothing less than the best possible quality, thus relying not only on particularly high-quality components, but also on very special circuit boards.

Once again, special attention was paid to the volume control, because the volume potentiometer plays a very important role for the high sound quality, according to the manufacturer. For this reason, they used the motorised ALPS RK27 from Japanese production.

As with all tube amplifiers from Unison Research, the output transformers of the Unison Research Simply 845 have an exclusive design developed by the Italians, who also emphasise that they are manufactured individually and by hand.

Four inputs are available

The new Unison Research Simply 845 has four inputs, designed with RCA sockets that are gold-plated. The stereo full amplifier also has a tape out and a separate output to bring a subwoofer into play, as the data sheet reveals.

A heavyweight by all means

It will probably not surprise anyone that a solution in this class has an imposing appearance and weighs quite a bit. The new Unison Research Simply 845 is only 37 cm wide and a modest 26 cm high, but it is 57 cm deep and weighs 30,5 kg.

Thanks to the skilful combination of stainless steel in black lacquer and brushed metallic finish as well as noble wood in walnut or cherry, the new Unison Research Simply 845 once again appears as a particularly elegant solution that is an ornament for every hi-fi rack.

Prices and availability

As already mentioned, the new Unison Research Simply 845 will celebrate its world premiere at Axpona 2023 in the USA. The official premiere in German-speaking countries is planned for the High End 2023 in Munich in mid-May, but the first products could already be available in specialist shops before then. The price of the new Unison Research Simply 845 is likely to be around € 8.900,-, as initial speculations suggest.

Getting to the point

The new Unison Research Simply 845 from the Italian hi-fi manufacturer Unison Research is a remarkable amplifier and a new edition of a true classic. As the name suggests, the tubes used here are a special feature of the new stereo integrated amplifier, but also the fact that it operates solely in Class A and relies on a construction designed with special care put the new Unison Research Simply 845 almost at the top of the Unison Research range.
